Segment Display is a widely applied and indispensable display technology in the field of power equipment.
1. Extremely high reliability and stability
· The segment display screen has a simple structure and mature driver IC, with almost no risk of pixel failure. Its operating temperature range is extremely wide (typically ranging from -30℃ to +80℃ or even wider), making it highly suitable for harsh environments where power equipment operates (such as hot summers and cold winters in power distribution rooms).
2. Ultra-low power consumption
· Many power equipment emphasize energy conservation, and some devices (such as electricity meters) are powered by batteries or have extremely low power consumption requirements in standby mode. The segment display screen only consumes a small amount of current during switching, and the static power consumption is almost zero, which is incomparable to active-illuminating screens like TFT.
3. Excellent cost-effectiveness
· For applications that only require the display of fixed-format numbers and symbols, the cost of segment display screens is much lower than that of TFT LCD screens or OLED screens. In areas such as intelligent electricity meters with large production volumes, saving one yuan in cost is of great significance.
4. Clear display and excellent visibility
· The pen segments are large, with high contrast (especially in black-and-white mode), and can be easily read even in strong light or in dimly lit power distribution rooms. The viewing angle is also very large, almost reaching 180 degrees.
5. Long service life
· The lifespan of the liquid crystal material is very long. As long as the backlight does not damage, its display function can last for several decades, perfectly matching the design life of power equipment, which is usually 10-20 years.
6. Strong anti-electromagnetic interference capability
· There is a strong electromagnetic field around power equipment. The simple structure and driving method of the segment display screen make it have better anti-interference performance than complex dot matrix screens, and the display will not have garbled or flickering due to interference.
IV. Limitations of the Segment Display Screen and Its Development Trends
Despite its prominent advantages, the segment display screen also has its inherent limitations:
· Fixed display content: Complex graphics, Chinese characters or dynamic images cannot be displayed.
· Customization: Each screen needs to be specially designed and molded according to the display content, and there is a mold cost in the early stage.
Development Trend:
To address these shortcomings and meet more complex requirements, the display solutions for power equipment are also evolving:
· Combination of segment display screen and TFT screen: In some high-end protection and control devices, both types of screens are usually equipped. The segment display screen is used to display the most critical and core parameters permanently (to ensure reliability and low power consumption), while the TFT screen is used for detailed settings, viewing curves, displaying system wiring diagrams, and other complex operations.
· Advanced segment display screen: By designing more complex segment patterns, it can display more symbols and even simple Chinese characters. At the same time, using technologies such as VA (vertical orientation), the liquid crystal can provide a wider viewing angle and higher contrast.
Summary
The segment display screen is the "pillar" of the display solution for power equipment. It may not be "extremely eye-catching", but it achieves the most core display requirements in the power industry with unparalleled reliability, ultra-low power consumption and excellent cost control. In the foreseeable future, the segment display screen will still occupy an irreplaceable and important position in power equipment.
