Mass production and vehicle deployment in 2027: BOE's automotive UDC-LCD screen finalized.2027

On February 4th, according to South Korean media reports, BOE plans to commercialize automotive LCD displays (LCDs) equipped with under-display camera (UDC) technology by 2027. Under-display camera technology hides the camera module beneath the display screen, achieving a hole-free, integrated design.

According to South Korean industry insiders on February 3rd, a subsidiary of BOE has successfully developed a UDC LCD display suitable for automotive applications. The core innovation of this product lies in its use of a special infrared transmission film, which eliminates the need for openings in the panel, allowing for hidden camera deployment. South Korean industry insiders stated that current OLED panels cannot transmit infrared light, necessitating openings for automotive cameras. However, this new technological breakthrough achieves a hole-free design for LCD panels while maintaining infrared camera functionality. Although the infrared transmittance is slightly lower than with opening solutions, it still meets the requirements for automotive use. At CES 2026 last month, BOE showcased its 15.6-inch UDC automotive display with a resolution of 1920×1080, a pixel density of 141 PPI, and an infrared camera transmittance of 18%. At the same time, 3M also unveiled its self-developed infrared transparent film, enabling infrared cameras to image through the film.

South Korean media pointed out that BOE executives recently stated that mass-produced vehicles equipped with this technology will officially hit the market in 2027. Although specific clients and vehicle models were not disclosed, this statement clearly indicates that the technology is nearing commercialization. Under-display cameras, as a core technology for automotive cockpits, have attracted significant industry attention. Compared to traditional exposed cameras, the hidden design better integrates with the overall interior aesthetics of the vehicle. Meanwhile, Europe is pushing forward with mandatory driver monitoring regulations, requiring in-vehicle cameras to monitor the driver's gaze and unexpected situations in real time; UDC technology will be one of the key solutions for compliance.
